Incandescent bulbs: why ban when you can tax?

Dennis Brougham on June 26, 2007 | 780 Views

Is banning incandescent lightbulbs the best approach? Wouldn't it be better to find a way to let the consumer choose? If a government raised taxes on incandescent bulbs so that they were the same price as, say, LEDs, then the consumer would choose between two products of the same price where one lasts significantly longer and has seemingly much lower negative environmental impact. In the transition period, those still clinging to the old bulbs -- buying out of habit -- would provide taxes that could go to other government programs, such as subsidies for renewable energies or the LED industry itself.
