Are "energy efficient" Light bulbs really worthwhile?
About 6 months ago we decided to make our apartment more "energy effiecient". At some expense we changed all of our light bulbs to energy efficient light bulbs. The first thing we noticed was the additional time they take to actually fully light-up. We've had so many visitors who keep turning the light on and off as they think the switch has not actually worked. But that's something you get used to really quickly. We also noticed that the shapes, sizes and colours available are nowhere near as extensive as normal light bulbs which means that some of our lamps are not so aesthetically pleasing as they were before and the energy efficient bulbs don't really work in lamps where you have the option to adapt the level of intensity of the light emitted.
However, all that said, at the end of the month when we got our electricity bill it really showed the difference. For the small inconveniences caused (which after time you don't even notice) these light bulbs really are worthwhile for the home. You save on your electricity bill at the same time you help the environment by saving energy.
So in my opinion the answer to the question in short is... Yes they are!

I'm somewhat surprised you find that the lamps take time to switch on. That was certainly true of the earliest ones, but it seems to me the more modern compact fluorescents switch on fairly instantaneously.
It is however true that they don't reach maximum light output until they've been on for a few seconds.
A couple of other minor gripes:
The colour of the light still seems harsh to me, though they've been improvements here too over the last few years.
The lamps still often look rather ugly.
There's still a significant problem with disposal of all fluorescent lamps - see Jonathan Buck's article http://wattwatt.com/pulses/9/the-impact-of-compact-fluros/ - strictly speaking fluorescent lamps are supposed to be disposed of as hazardous waste.

I agree that the switch on speed has improved over the years.. having lived in many energy efficient places.. but there is still some way to go before they match the normal light blubs. I must admit when I was a child I used to think the way energy light bulbs worked was saving energy by turning on so slowly!
Good to know about the disopsal- I didn't know that as I have not had to dispose of any yet so far!
