solar powered pump + small hydro

Gareth Ruck on February 14, 2008 | 2118 Views | 5 Comments

Hi all -

I've just decided to be more pro-active about managing my energy use so please forgive me if my questions seem simplistic!

A friend told me about a method of electricity generation by which a solar powered water pump takes water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir during the day, and then (at night) the upper reservoir feeds a hydro generator.

My home is on a hillside property that could be perfect for this method. I'm wondering if it has been done of a SMALL scale before.

Many thanks

Gareth

WATER DYNAMO - SMALL HYDRO - Sounds like a good idea if we could CHARGE A BATTERY BANK even at afternoon while the water is being used. Does anybody know where I could get a sizeable WATER DYNAMO - SMALL HYDRO, that would work on water running down from 20 feet HEAD thru 2 inch pipes....? I am trying to explain the rate of flow of the water.

This is something I am actually going to work on pretty soon. Thanks a lot Gareth Ruck......nice remark.

If the reservoir can deliver high water flow and located >15 meters higher than where you leave, the simple way to produce electricity is to use centrifugal water pump with suitable excitation capcitors. Please visit

This is project made by a NGO in Thailand to produce electricity for a school in north western province on Thailand.

I make the controler for them to keep voltage stable at 240Vac all the time.

I hope this information is what you want to know, you can use smaller pump for smaller power generation.

Great idea and I hope with the suggestions above you can very wel give it a try

Hi,

Filling a tank or charging a battery are two options to do the same: storing energy. The main advantage of the first method is the minimal impact on the enviroment, whereas the battery needs to be recycled periodically and generally it has dangerous substances like lead, cadmiun, etc.

I found this in Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroelectric_energy_storage

"1000 kilograms of water (1 cubic meter) at the top of a 100 meter tower has a potential energy of about 0.272 kW·h."
