Electricty grid vs Telecoms Networks

Interesting piece if - from my perspective - only because of the comparison between the electricity grid and telecoms networks. It's not something that I'd thought much about before... but clearly telecoms networks have evolved at an extraordinary pace in the last decades. Have electricity companies followed suit?
