US Department of Energy funds photovoltaic research
The US Department of Energy is providing $14m towards research in photovoltaic technologies for a new generation of solar cells. The goal is to reduce the costs of these systems from current levels of 18-23 cents per kilowatt hour to 5-10 cents per kilowatt hour in 2015 - and presumably without just relying on the weakness of the US currency to do so.
This follows earlier funding of $21m for projects looking at solid-state lighting as a replacement for the expensive incandescent lights that we currently use in too many places.
They've got coverage on the DofE website, and the announcement gives full details of the projects. There's a nice writeup on Network World.
Thanks to Slashdot for the tip - there's a lively discussion there too.
