Carbon Credits: Credit Where It's Not Due

Kristen Lee on May 9, 2008 | 1301 Views | 1 Comment

Yesterday I submitted a blogpost to Matter Network (.com) based on my experience at a fundraiser luncheon for International Rivers. Several speakers presented on an issue surrounding carbon offset trading in countries under the Kyoto Protocol. According to International Rivers, the Clean Development Mechanism used to globally trade carbon offsets is leading to sales of fake carbon credits.

I'm based in San Francisco, US, so I'd like to ask my fellow WattWatters in other countries- Are you familiar with this news?  Have you been exposed to these ideas or allegations? I certainly hadn't. I wonder if this is something I've missed because the US doesn't follow Kyoto, therefore the CDM issue hasn't been prominent in our backyards. Certainly seems to affect us all globally...

Please give me any insight you may have! Looking forward to it!

Kristen,

This is a question I asked out of curiosity a while back when I first contributed to a carbon offset site for air travel and I was told by an informed source (someone from the IPCC) that I need not worry. There was no problem with fake sites.

Your information then does worry me.

It'll be interesting to see if people from other countries have come across this problem. I don't think it has anything to do with Kyoto either. Just pure dishonesty.
