Solar cell efficiency may improve
A team of researchers at TU Delft (Netherlands) and the FOM (Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter) under Prof. Laurens Siebbeles have a paper in the journal Nano Matters (subscription required) next week reporting that the avalanche effect for electrons has been observed in lead selenide (PbSe) nanocrystalsl, reports Physorg.com.
This matters because instead of one photon releasing one electron, these semiconducting nanocrystals can sustain a cascade effect where one photon can release two or three electrons, giving a theoretical maximum efficiency of 44%, a factor of three improvement over current technologies.
