Electrochemical energy storage
Storing large quantity of electrical energy is still a major problem. This is a great concern especially for wind and solar energy which the availability by nature cannot be controlled. To improve this availability or compensate the variation of needs, new type of batteries have been developed. They are based on reversible redox-vanadium cells capable of storing and supplying several Mw of electrical power in chemical form. The Ireland republic wich has decided to produce 33% of the electrical energy needs from wind is one of the interested customers for that sort of technology ( see www.vrbpower.com )

On Leonardo ENERGY, we've just published a briefing paper on these flow batteries, which sound like a great idea. But if so, the question remains why they take so much time to come to market. Also I'd be interested to hear the inside story why the Regenysis project in UK was abandoned.
