The Impact of Compact Fluros
While various countries around the world are pushing ahead to ban incandescent light bulbs with compact flurorescent lightbulbs, an interesting article on NewsTarget (www.NewsTarget.com/021907.html) questions whether the new compact bulbs do not pose a longer term risk if they are not disposed of correctly. Interesting to note that the author, Mike Adams, argues for the use of LEDs as the energy efficient and more environmentally friendly solution.

I read the NewsTarget article. It is frightening to learn how dangerous and toxic compact fluorescent light bulbs are. I just cannot understand how government approval was obtained for these bulbs since "breaking one mercury light bulb in your home can contaminate your home to such a degree that hazardous materials experts are needed to remove the mercury." (http://www.newstarget.com/021907.html)The article also mentions that "an estimated 600 million fluorescent lamps are disposed of in U.S. landfills, amounting to 30,000 pounds of mercury waste. Astonishingly, that's almost half the amount of mercury emitted into the atmosphere by coal-fired power plants each year. It only takes 4mg of mercury to contaminate up to 7,000 gallons of freshwater, meaning that the 30,000 pounds of mercury thrown away in compact fluorescent light bulbs each year is enough to pollute nearly every lake, pond, river and stream in North America (not to mention the oceans)."
So...
I hurried off to look at the LED alternative, which is much more energy efficient and does not contain pollants. Everything looked perfect until I finally found a website where I could buy a 75 watt equivalent bulb. GASP!!! US$ 79.- (on sale) for just one!
http://www.betterlifegoods.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=LED%2DCAT21416I sure hope prices will come down soon... I just can't see myself adding 10 or so to "my basket".
Really scary!!Now I'll take special care to never break one of these nasty and still so common light bulbs... How can it be that there isn't even the slightest warning anywhere when people buy these light bulbs?!?
